My latest book finally hits bookstores today. 35 of the world’s best road trips, spanning the globe from Iceland to South Africa, Colorado to Japan, New Zealand to New Caledonia and 29 other points inbetween. It took a bit longer to write than I thought it would (thanks to the pandemic!), and we drove a lot of miles, but it was a huge amount of fun to research. Snapshots from our roadtrip along the Old Andado Track, between Alice Springs and Mount Dare on the northern edge of the Simpson Desert. A highlight was Old Andado Homestead, snap frozen in time just as it was when its owner, Molly Clark, left it in the early 2000s. She lived out here, alone after her husband was killed in 1978, until well into her 80s. Full of her personal possessions it should be looked after and preserved as a museum, but sadly it is beginning to fill with dust and spiderwebs and general neglect. Even worse, while most travellers respect it as a monument to an amazing pioneering woman and enjoy the privilege of being able to freely walk through her home, others see it as a chance to steal a souvenir. It’s also home to a stand of one of Australia’s rarest trees, the Acacia Peuce (aka the Waddi tree). #ultimateroadtrips

There are some things money can’t buy. Best ever bird show from our weekend campsite beside a billabong on the Georgina River near Camooweal in outback Queensland. Herons, egrets, brolga, pelicans, ducks, darters, kingfishers, ibis, eagles, hawks and kites. All day birdie action, right outside our tent door. And the kicker; it’s all free! #ultimateroadtrips #birdlife

In Tassie you don’t hug the trees, they hug you. This giant swamp gum in the Blue Tiers near Derby, in the north-east of the state, at the end of a fantastic 45-minute walk through the rainforest, is known as the Cradle Tree, and reputed to be one of the widest trees in the country. Certainly feels like it when you’re enveloped by its base.

In Tassie, it feels like every backroad leads to a stupendous view. This one is at the Devil’s Gullet, on a ledge 220 metres above the valley floor below. On a clear day you can see most of the peaks of the central plateau, including Cradle Mountain and Mt Ossa, Tassie’s highest. #ultimateroadtripsaustralia

The Western Explorer Hwy was dubbed the Road to No

The Western Explorer Hwy was dubbed the Road to Nowhere when it was built in the mid 1990s, but it actually goes somewhere very special, right through the heart of the Tarkine to Corinna, on the Pieman River. The abandoned 1880s gold rush town has been transformed into a wilderness retreat where you can stay in the historic buildings, immerse yourself in the rainforest on walking trails, and cruise the river in a beautiful boat built from Huon pine in 1939. It even has a pub! It’s one of my all-time favourite places in Australia.
